In his early days Hayden already competed with drivers who were twice his age in the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Assiocation (CMRA). In his first MotoGP year in 2003 he straightaway finished fifth overall and was voted ?Rookie of the year?. In 2004 he finished eighth and in 2005 third overall. He achieved his first MotoGP victory on the 10 th of July 2005 at his home Grand Prix in Laguna Seca. On October 29 th 2006 he won the MotoGP World championship, with only two victories but very consistent racing over the year and overall 252 point, while Valentino Rossi, the second seed finished with 247 points. His best results afterwards were three third places in the 2007 season and one second place in 2008. In September of 2008 Hayden announced that after six years of MotoGP with Honda, he would switch to the Ducati factory team from the beginning of the 2009 season onwards.
