Ducati 900SS

The decision to build the Ducati 900 Super Sport was to challenge the increasing Japanese competition. Prior to the 900 Super Sport, the 750 GT, Sport and Super Sport Desmo two cylinder machines with round engine housing appeared. Ducati had realized that problem and desperately needed a top performance motor cycle which would beat the Japanese Maxi-Bikes competition with their 750 ccm machines.

In the beginning Ducati decided to build a more touring like motor cycle. Giudiaro designed the 860 GT, but it did not really convince the consumers taste. Due to a number of victories with the wonderful 750 SS Desmo, the company then opted for a more sporty version, which was then the 900 Super Sport.

The 860 engine was a modification of the originally for the 750 GT designed 90 degree V two cylinder engine. The design of the engine house was completely done new and appeared in a rectangular shape.
